Origin of Monoterpene Emissions from Boreal Tree Species: Determination of De Novo and Pool Emissions
نویسندگان
چکیده
Boreal forests are dominated by monoterpenes emitting tree species (Rinne et al., 2009). Traditionally the monoterpene emissions from coniferous tree species are assumed to originate as evaporation from large storage pools (Guenther et al., 1991). Thus their diurnal cycle would depend only on temperature. However, there is indication that a significant part of the monoterpene emission would originate directly from synthesis (e.g. Shao et al., 2001). Such de novo emission would be rapidly labelled with C were the plant fed with CO2 (Figure 1). Thus this method can be used to quantify the fraction of the emission originating directly from synthesis.

Quantification of monoterpene emission sources of a conifer species in response to experimental drought
Monoterpene (MT) emissions of conifer tree species, emitted from de novo synthesis and storage pools, play an important role in plant ecology and physiology. During drought stress both emission sources are affected differently and with conventional measuring techniques they are difficult to separate. We investigated 13C labelled MT emission of eight 3-year-old Scots pine seedlings in a drought ...

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted into the atmosphere from natural and anthropogenic sources, vegetation being the dominant source on a global scale. Some of these reactive compounds are deemed major contributors or inhibitors to aerosol particle formation and growth, thus making VOC measurements essential for current climate change research. This thesis discusses ecosystem scale VO...
متن کاملControls over monoterpene emissions from boreal forest conifers.
We investigated controls over the emission of monoterpenes from two species of boreal forest conifers, black spruce (Picea mariana Miller (B.S.P.)) and jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb). Monoterpenes are important in plants as carbon-based defensive compounds and in the atmosphere as photochemically reactive compounds that affect ozone and carbon monoxide concentrations. We examined ecological t...

The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by vegetation, especially forests, can affect local and regional atmospheric photochemistry through their reactions with atmospheric oxidants. Their reaction products may also participate in the formation and growth of new particles which affect the radiation balance of the atmosphere, and thus climate, by scattering and absorbing shortwave and long...
متن کاملBiogenic volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from forests in Finland
We present model estimates of biogenic volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from the forests in Finland. The emissions were calculated for the years 1995–1997 using the measured isoprene and monoterpene emission factors of boreal tree species together with detailed satellite land cover information and meteorological data. The three-year average emission is 319 kilotonnes per annum, which i...
